What Works and Why

This course explores the Teaching Learning and Assessment Improvement Strategies that have proved effective in delivering outstanding teaching, learning and assessment within Further Education. that is what works and what does not!

All Managers within Further Education need to ensure the time they spend on improving the quality of teaching training and learning will deliver the results they seek in the minimum amount of time and with the least amount of burden.

To achieve this they need to ensure they focus their attention on the areas and approaches that have been proven to be most effective.

This workshop is designed to help managers evaluate whether and how well their improvement strategies, are likely to deliver the types of improvements in teaching learning and assessment needed for their processes to be judged as outstanding.

The workshop is based on recent research by Ofsted into the organisational strategies, procedures and approaches that have proven most effective in enabling post 16 learning providers to deliver outstanding teaching training and learning.

This one-day workshops is designed for all managers working within post 16 FE & Skills. It is especially effective when delivered in-house with for managers those managers who can work together to agree and implement new approaches across the organisation, area of learning or department.

Topic 1 – Success Drivers
This section of the workshop will explore the key drivers that help organisations achieve and sustain outstanding practice.

Topic 2 – Barriers & Effective Practice in Planning Learning
This section of the workshop explores the factors that:

  • inhibit or prevent effective planning of learning sessions
  • enable teachers and trainers plan learning well.

Topic 3 – Teaching and Learning Strategies
This section examines:

  • the many and varied types of strategies that help to ensure highly effective learning takes plac
  • what organisations and individuals do which inhibits the utilisation of effective learning strategies

Topic 4 – Assessment of and for Learning
This section of the workshop considers:

  • the types of practice and organisational approaches which prevent effective assessment practice
  • what types of assessment practice support learning and help to ensure the achievement of session and course learning outcomes.

Topic 5 – Progress and Guidance
This section of the workshop explores:

  • What highly effective organisations do to ensure that learners understand the progress they are making, and what they need to do to achieve their goals.
  • The types of practices which prevent effective progress reviewing and monitoring.

Topic 6 – English, math, functional skills and skills for employment
This section of the workshop explores:

  • Common barriers to high quality teaching of these skills.
  • What practices help to ensure the effective teaching of these skills.

Topic 7 – Supporting and Challenging Teachers & Trainers to Improve.
This section of the workshop explores:

  • Strategies that have proved effective in helping staff improve their teaching, training and assessment skills.
  • Organisational action or lack of, which restricts or prevents the development of teaching, training and assessment skills.
